Great Dane Dog Breed

feature photo

The Great Dane is truly a giant amongst dogs but although considered by most to be the tallest of dog breeds it comes in second place to the Irish Wolfhound which though not as massive is on average actually a taller dog breed. Another popular misconception about the Great Dane dog is that the breed is Danish in origin, a misconception that is understandable considering the dog’s name.

Certainly it cannot be denied that the Great Dane is great in stature which would explain the “Great” in the dog’s name but how it came to be called “Dane” is a mystery that appears to have eluded even time in its resolution. However whatever the origins of the name Great Dane, in 1880 in an effort to rescue their canine heritage, German authorities stipulated that henceforth the dog breed should only be referred to as Deutsche Dogge. The English were having none of it. Much to the dismay and chagrin of the Germans following the English’s lead the rest of the English-speaking world has continued to refer to this giant of dog breeds as the Great Dane!
