Powerdogs-Central Asian Ovcharka
The Central Asian Ovcharka is also known as the:
- Alabai
- Central Asian Sheepdog
- Mid-Asian Shepherd
- Middle Asian Ovcharka
Like many of the large heavily built dog breeds the Central Asian Ovcharka is believed to be descended from the tibetan Mastiff though there are those who believe that this ancient breed is the true root of the large boned livestock protection dog breeds.
The Central Asian Ovcharka (also referred to as CAO by lovers of the breed) originates from a large range which encompasses central Russia all the way to Siberia and Mongolia.
Like the other livestock protection dog breeds the Central Asian Ovcharka is a large powerful dog bred to protect its wards from mauraders such as bears, wolves, stray dogs and other potential predators.
Classically the ears and tail of these dogs were cropped to prevent them being ripped off during violent encounters with wolves and bears.
Like all Powerdogs the Central Asian Ovcharka requires a firm and skilled hand at training and socialization if it is not to become a nuisance in an urban setting.

Great article! This breed is beautiful. They have a really massive and strong body shape. They look like excellent watchdogs. Thanks for posting this article!
