As its name suggests the Pembroke Welsh Corgi originates from Wales and ancient records suggest that the breed has been in existence since around 900 A.D. One popular theory has it that this dog breed was introduced to Great Britain by Flemish weavers taken there by King Henry I of England.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a striking similarity to its not so distant cousin the Cardigan Welsh Corgi (another Welsh breed) although the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is smaller in size, is less heavily boned and due to its sharper facial features has a more pronounced fox-like expression. The tell-tale difference between these two dog breeds is that very often the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is born tail less and generally speaking for those dogs born with one the tail is usually docked.

Not surprisingly the Pembroke Welsh Corgi breed was developed in Pembrokeshire, Wales as a quick-footed and versatile cattle herding dog. The dog would herd and direct the cattle by nipping at their heels and using its nimble agility to evade their hooves as they lashed out. For much of its existence prior to 1926 the Pembroke Welsh Corgi was purely a working dog and never featured at dog shows. However that changed in 1926 when the breed club was formed and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi was entered for the first time.
